Opening Letter
August 13, 2013
Dear Room 20 Families,
Welcome to fifth-grade and the 2012-2013 school year! I hope you had an enjoyable summer. In the coming days, you will be introduced to your classmates, as well as the fifth-grade curriculum and classroom procedures. It is my goal for students to enrich themselves academically, have a positive educational experience, and feel their ideas are valued, thus paving their way to middle school and life.
We will begin our school year with our language arts series, Treasures. Our first unit -- “Taking a Stand” -- will begin an in-depth study at how and why people take a stand for what they believe in. Our first social studies chapters will begin with geography and math will begin with place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in the first math quarter.
It is my hope that students will continue to develop a sense of responsibility and become self-directed learners. Through independent projects and guided research, we will be preparing presentations to be shared in front of the class. Students will be expected to manage their time as to complete these projects by the assigned due date. You may use either the PTA agenda book or any other organization/calendar tool of choice, but students must record their assignments and independently manage their school and personal schedules.
Students will be expected to type much of their work. I encourage all students to have a flash drive in school as well as a binder with dividers to organize their paperwork. Student server space is also provided for use while at school only, hence a flash drive will be more effective and reliable. Additionally, I will help students create their own Drop Box and show them how to use it. Please note the homework policy (attached) and on the Carpenter website. Additionally, students are expected to read 30 minutes daily.
Please feel free to communicate with me. I can be emailed ( [email protected] ) or sent a note with your child. Additionally, please email me as soon as possible with your basic contact information (with student name, parent names, email addresses, and phone numbers) so I can begin sending information to you. Also, please visit my website for more information: http://mrbreitsteinsclass20.weebly.com/
I look forward to spending this upcoming year as your student’s fifth grade teacher at Carpenter Community Charter.
Sincerely,
Mr. Myron Breitstein
